The DAO and the hard fork

Funds were taken out of an on-chain investment organization's contract by the rules as written; the community then voted to roll the transfer back, and the ledger split in two.

Watch it happen in “Programmable Money” →

Why it happened

Before · After

Before

Execution results written onto the chain were held to be immutable.

After

Execution results can be overturned by social consensus — at the cost of splitting the chain.

Why it matters

“Code is law” was abandoned at its first real test. Every discussion of on-chain governance since has been measured against this point.
